Since Orris has recently changed its name and concept to "Spaghetti House by Orris," I decided to honor my old favorite restaurant on Sawtelle with a post. (Note: My last visit to Orris was early last year (2011), so please keep that in mind when reading.)
seafood ceviche
We started off with one of J's favorite dishes, ever: ceviche. Orris's ceviche was acidic and refreshing, just how we like it. It was different in that it had a tomato base, which you wouldn't see in a traditional Mexican ceviche. Still, very good.
smoked salmon with creme fraiche blinis
We also opted for the smoked salmon blinis which was one of the specials that day. It wasn't anything special, salty as expected but with nice texture.
braised short rib
Always a sucker for something braised we ordered another new item on the menu, the braised short rib. The meat was very tender and flavorful. The sauce was sweet but did not overpower the meat. Great dish.
sauteed mushrooms
shrimp mousse ravioli with shitake mushrooms and bread
The sauteed mushrooms and the shrimp mousse ravioli were always my staples when I dined at Orris. I wonder if the new place still has the popular ravioli on the menu (I'll bet money it does). It was one of their best-selling items and when you order it, you'll see why. It's luscious. Yes, I said luscious. And it has full of flavor from the shrimp and mushrooms. Make sure you scoop up the extra sauce with their amazing bread.
Ending this post with my favorite menu item leaves me feeling quite sad. I'll miss you, Orris. I really hope the new you does the old you justice. I'll just have to check it for myself.

My last visit was also in early 2011, and I rather liked the place.
I am curious about Orris' new direction though. Let me know if you want to check it out sometime!
I really miss this place.
Kevin, I think you may have waited too long to try the Spaghetti House. I walked by the other day around lunch and the place was closed.
Kevin,
Sorry for the late reply, but yes I do want to check out Spaghetti House! I have a BBE coupon so email me your availability!
Bigmouth,
I think they are only open for dinner.

Hey Helen,
Joe here. Any return trips to Japan planned?
My girlfriend and I are heading over in early November for a couple of weeks and I'm already dreaming about our upcoming dinners.
Hi Joe!
I want to go back to Japan so badly!! But, I have to save up first before I can go. I'm hoping I can go sometime next year.
What's your dining plan for your upcoming trip? Please share your amazing meals!
Hi Helen,
I've booked a few faves (Sawada, Quintessence, The Molecular Tapas Bar) and plan to hit Hosokaya for unagi and the unbelievable Pizza Seirinkan in Naka-Meguro.
Will be spending a few days in Osaka this time where I hope to check out a couple of the places Bourdain visited on No Reservations (Sushi Koyoshi for one), and a day in Yokohama (Chatsubo).
I think I'll play the rest by ear. I discovered some great restaurants by being a little more spontaneous on my last visit in February (Nakajima and Imahan).
Where are the blog updates?
Joe
